“ Ordinary People/Extraordinary Music”

We are THE Mississippi Chorus

The Mississippi Chorus is a collection of voices, a community of people, bringing the depth of the choral repertoire to our listening audiences. Based in the city of Jackson, The Chorus reaches into the entire central Mississippi area and beyond to deliver excellence in choral music.

Who can become a member of The Chorus?

  • The Chorus is open to everyone without an entrance audition. Informal hearings will be held each season for placement within the Soprano, Alto, Tenor or Bass sections.
  • Basic music knowledge is needed; however, a voice that blends with others, a good music memory, and a love of choral music is required!!
  • Membership is open to singers age 18 and up.
  • Previous choral experience is helpful but not required.
  • We welcome non-singing members who volunteer and support our organization’s many technical and administrative tasks!

How do I join?

Joining The Chorus is as easy as filling out a  registration form and coming to a rehearsal. It’s THAT simple. You will be met by a section representative who will introduce you to fellow choristers – we ARE a friendly bunch and want you to feel at home!

What costs are involved?

Costs are established per season. The Chorus has TWO basic seasons – Fall/Winter and Spring/Summer Scholarships are available. To inquire, contact the Artistic Director.

Member Dues are $35/per Season or $60 for the entire season.

Music Dues are assessed per Season. Each Season’s music will be available for purchase at cost through The Chorus. If you purchase your music elsewhere, it must be the same edition as that being used by the rest of the choristers.

Music Folder An official “Mississippi Chorus” concert folder is required, and costs $35.

We ask each member to be responsible to sell 12 tickets to each concert.

What will I have to wear?

Women wear a black concert top – Cost: Approximately $40 --and an appropriate long black skirt or black pants, and closed-toe black shoes. Men wear a black tuxedo (no tails), white wing-tip collar shirt, black tie, black cummerbund, black socks, and black dress shoes. BLACK studs in button holes of visible portion of shirt and matching (with studs) BLACK or gold cuff links.

Do I have to come to EVERY rehearsal?

  • You are missed when you are absent!
  • Faithful rehearsal attendance is the only way The Mississippi Chorus can succeed. While 100% attendance is the goal, 75% attendance is required in order to participate in the performances. If for some reason you need to ask for an exception to be made, please contact the Artistic Director.
  • Attendance at all dress rehearsals is required.

Where and when do we rehearse?

• Monday, 7–9 p.m. and as announced, held in the Parish Hall at St. Columb’s Episcopal Church, 550 Sunnybrook Road, Ridgeland, MS 39157.

• Rehearsals begin promptly at 7 p.m.

• Dress rehearsals are held the night before the performance at the performance site unless otherwise announced.
